The Board Game Barrister in Glendale, Wisconsin is our June Store of the Month

The Board Game Barrister in Glendale, Wisconsin is our June Store of the Month

Blue Orange Games is lucky to partner with a fantastic bunch of retailers who are businesses and supportive of our games. We want to do more to Barrister_Welcome_Banner_WEB (1)recognize the stores and individuals that make our mission possible.  That’s how our monthly spotlight on an outstanding Blue Orange Games retailer came about! We are pleased to announce that The Board Game Barrister in Glendale, Wisconsin is our Store of the Month for June!

Our sales manager, Florian, nominated this store for their excellent work promoting and bringing their customers both gamer games and more family-oriented games. He highly commends the owner, Gordon Lugauer, for the manner in which he handles his business as well as his “perfect knowledge of the industry.” Gordon, whom I had the pleasure of speaking with, first began playing Dungeons and Dragons at the age of five and the game was a persistent and well-loved influence in his life up into junior high school. He also has a long-standing love for abstract strategy games, particularly those made out of wood. It’s no surprise then that he was attracted to one of our first games, Gobblet, when his store was just starting out and felt he had to stock it. So The Board Game Barrister has been watching and supporting our line since the very beginning which is why they deserve a big THANK YOU from the whole team over here at Blue Orange Games.

Gordon didn’t always know he was destined to open a thriving toy store which would become Blue Orange’s Store of the Month! In fact, he started out as a technical consultant and had been studying to become a lawyer when he realized that he wanted to have fun, engaging interactions face to face with people! That’s how, without much preparation, the bright idea hit him to open what he thought would be a part-time addition to his law school studies. He called it the Board Game Barrister because a barrister is a lawyer who advocates for people in the higher courts of law, which is what he was studying to become. Needless to say this “side project” soon took up all of his time and though he always meant to go back to studying law as soon as things at the store hit a plateau, things at The Board Game Barrister just haven’t slowed down!

Gordon credits dumb luck that he studied just enough law as is useful for owning your own business and negotiating. He also happens to live above a long-vacated one hundred year old movie theater and conjoined carpet store which he has converted into his toy warehouse. But that’s as far as luck goes; the rest is insight and hard prep work.

store pic

What makes a toy store successful, Gordon says, is the ability to listen to what his customers want by how they speak through their actions. It’s about getting at the heart of the experience, the feel they get in the store and then also the gameplay and memories they are taking home with them. At his store, it is a “barristers” job to advocate on behalf of the people who are going to receive or play the game and shine a light on the experience a customer would be getting so that they are already equipped mentally to have a good time or to convey that enthusiasm to the person whom they are giving the gift. A good toy store has to nail that mentality or else customers would just buy the game online.

It may be hard for our online readers to see the impact of Gordon’s attitude on the store and employees but it is clear that at The Board Game Barrister, they are doing something right. After all the hard work choosing games at Toy Fair and prepping for Christmas like Santa Claus himself, Gordon is blown away by the sheer number of heart-warming interactions his store facilitates during the holiday season and all year round. In particular, one of his favorite things is seeing a new hire really getting ‘it’ by taking the right initiatives and then using that development somewhere positively. He knows his store is doing something right when a past employee says “the things I learned working at The Barrister I use EVERYDAY” and he is very proud of some of them who have moved on to become teachers or are very good in their specific fields.

By the very way he talks about his business it is obvious that though Gordon loves games, he invests in the people. I was surprised how modest he was when it came to telling me about his store’s involvement into the community. Turns out dedicated crowds of thirty to fifty people come into both of his locations late every Friday night from the local area just to play games, an impressive fact that I felt he greatly understated. I’d elaborate, but perhaps a quote from the Barrister’s official store handbook describes this phenomenon best:

“In addition to the open game library (which is available anytime) we have a calendar of scheduled events. On Friday nights, a regular crowd of hooligans emerges from the cracks of geekdom to grace us with their presence. We affectionately refer to these people as “The Magic Players.” We like them, they spend money on cardboard crack; they’re friendly. Generally, we let them do their own thing but they do take up many tables.”

What better way to foster love for your store than to open it up for customers to not only buy the games but also to make fun memories inside of it!

SOMBoardGameBarrister

Thank you to Board Game Barrister for their continued support and love of Blue Orange Games. If you’re ever in Wisconsin before 11pm on a Friday night and want to play with some “geeky hooligans,” just know that The Board Game Barrister will still be open.

Wonder Works Toys – Store of the Month

Wonder Works Toys – Store of the Month

Blue Orange Games is lucky to partner with a fantastic bunch of retailers who are passionate about their businesses and supportive of our games. We want to do more to recognize the stores and individuals that make our mission possible.  That’s how our monthly spotlight on an outstanding Blue Orange Games retailer came about! We are pleased to announce that Wonder Works Toys in Charleston, South Carolina is our Store of the Month for May!wonderworksRenaud, from our sales team, nominated this store because of their dedication to the local community and their passion for creating fun times with their customers. Renaud also recognized Wonder Works Toys “For their continuous support, the energy they show in their store and how they are dedicated to bringing happiness to kids. They have the perfect location for the summer time and are very loyal to Blue Orange Games!”

Wonder Work Toys is often known as being the ‘Trendy Toy Store’. The store does a lot of research to discover what the latest trend will be and makes sure to have it in stock! I had the pleasure of speaking with Elizabeth, who has been an employee for 15 years and has worked all positions that are available in the store. She is currently the director of operations and it is clear that she has a lot of experience in toy store buying and trends!

2015050195110751 (1)

Elizabeth tuned us in on the latest trends and what is exciting to come this year. Currently, Shopkins has taken storm of their store, “These Shopkins are so hard to find, but we have them in stock! Shopkins will be around for a while, and soon Ugleez will be added to the brand.” These are not the only trends of the year, “Dinosaurs are huge, especially with Jurassic World coming out so soon. Kids are always seeking out dinosaur toys, but this will be heightened even more. We also cannot forget Star Wars; I can promise that will be huge this year!”

How does a store always know what the latest trend will be and how long it will last? Simple, it is the passion of coming to work and listening to industry peers. Elizabeth stated, “It is so important to listen to your peers and what is going on in the industry. The specialty store community is a tight one and is not afraid to give advice or share their secrets to success.” On top of that, Wonder Works’ employees are passionate about what they do and give their opinions on games to purchase. Customers are used as a resource to bring in the games that they want to see on the shelves.

While trends are important to follow to keep your store thriving, Elizabeth shared an even more compelling aspect of Wonder Works Toys. You could hear the smile in Elizabeth’s voice when she stated, “Magic happens here, any store could say that, but I have witnessed it.”  Wonder Works Toys have spread the magic through major acts of kindness, for example, Wonder Works has thrown a birthday party for a boy who came in after no one showed up to his party. It is simple acts like this that allow magic to happen under their roof.

Wonder Works also takes pride in their community work and partners with local charities in the area. A lot of the charities are kid’s ideas and Wonder Works helps to support them. One charity raised 65 thousand dollars to build a crisis ministry homeless shelter. This is an aspect that Wonder Works is involved in that gives back to the community, aside from being a toy store.

StoreoftheMonth_HiResThank you to Wonder Works for their continued support and love of Blue Orange Games. When you are in South Carolina, make sure to pay a visit to the ‘Trendy Toy Store!’

Xavier, from our sales team, nominated this store because of their dedication to the local community and their passion for creating fun times with their customers. Xavier also recognized Top Ten Toys because of their loyalty and being one of our oldest customers. Katie, a Top Ten Toys employee, remembers Julien, Blue Orange Owner, coming into the store of Blue Orange’s first big road trip!

Top Ten Toys has been open since 1987 and is the largest toy store in Seattle! Top Ten originally opened as a store for homeschoolers which is why they bring in toys with an educational flare. When speaking with Kristi, Top Ten buyer, she stated “Our mission statement is keeping healthy play alive. I have been working here for over 10 years. I became the game and skill toy buyer shortly after I started working here because I am a board game lover and a skill toy enthusiast!”

Top Ten Toys is ready to share their secrets to success, “I think the secret to having a successful toy store is knowing your customer base and being part of your community.  We donate to local charities and school auctions.”  There is no doubt that Top Ten Toys puts their community first. With cheerful employees and ready to help at anytime service, customers never leave the store disappointed. Even when visiting the website, the contact button is always available if you have a question when shopping! Their dedication to customer satisfaction is evident when Krista shares “I get the most satisfaction out my job when a customer falls in love with an item we carry.”

It is a joy to have been working with Top Ten Toys for many years. Since Kristi is familiar with our game selection, we thought it would be fun to hear her personal favorites, “Blue Orange has many games I enjoy but my favorite is Flash or Fastrack but I have to say I am really enchanted with Thumbs Up!  That one is lots of fun!!!” It is always great to hear that our current and classic games can be lumped together as someone’s favorites.

And of course, we think that Top Ten Toys is awesome too!

Flying Circus Toys- January Store of the Month

Flying Circus Toys- January Store of the Month

FCT

Blue Orange Games is lucky to partner with a fantastic bunch of retailers who are passionate about their businesses and supportive of our games.  We want to do more to recognize the stores and individuals that make our mission possible.  That’s how our monthly spotlight on an outstanding Blue Orange Games retailer came about!

We are pleased to announce that Flying Circus Toys in Albertville, MN is our Store of the Month for January!  Bart, from our sales team, nominated this store because of their dedication to the local community and their passion for creating fun times with their customers.

Only two years old, Flying Circus Toys has made a name for itself at the Albertville Premium Outlets.  Having been voted one of the Top 10 Specialty Toy Stores in Minnesota, Flying Circus Toys has become a destination for shoppers around the world.

SOMpicture

Walking into Flying Circus Toys, the little kid will light up in everyone from being surrounded by bright colors and toys galore.  But how did this marvelous toy store come about?  Jessica, the store owner, started in specialty toys over 20 years ago, attending toy trade shows with her sister-in-law.  Having worked as a buyer, she was inspired to start a specialty toy store closer to home and family.

Family ties are an important influence at Flying Circus Toys, even in its unique name.  To many customers, the name means a great toy and a great time, but to Jessica and her family it means much more.  Jessica’s grandmother was the name’s inspiration, being that she was a part of the Ringling Bros. Circus!

When visiting “the GREATEST toy store on Earth!” new customers will learn and returning friends know that they will always be given a wonderful experience while shopping.  The staff’s number one priority is to make sure that each customer has a valuable experience. Whether or not someone leaves the store having purchased a game, they will leave with a smile on their face.

The Flying Circus team takes pride in helping their customers choose the perfect gift or game.  One of their favorites to give and play is our very own Fastrack!  Being that it is a short game that can be explained quickly, it is an easy sell to customers.  On top of that, Fastrack can be played by all ages, which, according to Jessica, is this year’s trend—games that the whole family can enjoy together no matter their ages.

If you are one of the seven million visitors to go to Albertville Premium Outlets this year, I am sure you will find yourself happily entering the world of Flying Circus Toys and leaving with a smile and a wonderful game!

We want to do more to recognize the stores and individuals that make our mission possible. That’s how our monthly spotlight on an outstanding Blue Orange Games retailer came about!

toys&cologo

We are pleased to announce that Toys & Co. in Greensboro, NC is our Store of the Month for December! Renaud, from our sales team, nominated this store because of their dedication to their local community and their passion for creating fun times with their customers.

We all have a bit of kid in us, some more than others, but where do we go when we need to unwind and be a giant kid? Well a toy store of course! Stepping into a toy store is more than buying the toy you want, there is an overall experience that we all wish for that Toys & Co. definitely provides.

For over 40 years, Toys & Co. has made customers the main priority of their business. Many believe that this is the sole reason that they have had many years of success—having cool toys doesn’t hurt either!

When walking into Toys & Co. your eyes will light up just by seeing the 44 thousand items that surround you. Some may be in heaven, but some may be a bit lost when searching for that one gift. Don’t you worry because Toys & Co. will not let you tackle this adventure alone. Staff members are trained and knowledgeable on every game that is inside their store. Once you enter those doors, a staff member will be happy to assist you and guide you to that perfect purchase.

Great customer service plays a huge role in why we return or remember a certain store or experience, but customer satisfaction is brought to a new level at Toys & Co. Almost all of their toys have demos that the staff members are very excited to explain and share with their customers. Even if there is not a demo available, more likely than not, Toys & Co. will be happy to open the game or toy and share that with you from their own shelves.

Of course we all know that sometimes getting to the physical store is a challenge, but Toys & Co. offers this experience online as well. You can visit their website to order toys or games right there. The site is a big helper just like the in store staff members. It is well organized and can point you in the direction of purchases for the right age, by award, by category, and so on! They even have a list of their top 100 games for the Holiday season to help guide buyers to the perfect gift.

Whether you are shopping in store or online and looking for this years hottest silly putty or for the original Spot it!, Toys & Co. will help you find the right gift in no time!

The whole team at Blue Orange Games would like to thank the Toys & Co. team for believing in our games and for creating rewarding, educational experiences for their community. Congrats!
