Making Games with the Children’s Creativity Museum

Making Games with the Children’s Creativity Museum

Working at a children’s board game company, we get a lot of opportunities to work on cool projects that inspire and uplift kids. Most recently, we partnered with the San Francisco Children’s Creativity Museum, as part of a 6 month exhibit they were doing on games. We donated several of our giant-sized games for free play in the entry room and they made big, instructional signs for us. It was fun to see the games in a structured exhibit environment — as opposed to the usual chaotic, high-energy events I attend (I’m talking about you, Gen Con). The CCM certainly has a high level of energy too, but its more focused on the act and artistry of creation.

In addition to the games donated to be put on exhibit, we also put on a two part workshop based on two of our most popular titles: Rally Up! and Fast Flip. During this workshop we helped kids at the museum create their own games with only paper, markers, scissors and stickers. The goal of the project was to inspire kids, and to show them how easy and fun it is to make their own games.

Our table at the Museum.

Our retail version of Fast Flip, features a deck of 54 cards with 15 pictures on each card. The goal is to find the right match between the back of one card and the front of another card. For our simplified DIY version, we reduced the number of pictures on each card from 15 to 3, and we gave the kids a set of stickers to put on.

Kids used donated stickers to make their own Fast Flips.

While some kids worked on making their own Fast Flips, we had two other tables set up for the Rally Up! project. Rally Up! is a game of categories, where each card has a picture of something from a specific category. When two cards (or more) that show the same category are flipped up, the first player to call that category scores them.

For our Rally Up! project, we had kids draw their own cards. They were allowed to come up with whatever category they chose and then draw pictures that fell into those categories. It was interesting to discover that many of the categories chosen by the children were categories in our retail version of the game as well. Like…

Fruits

Monsters

Candies

After combining all of the drawings from the two workshops (and removing some categories that only had a few images), we were able to create the final game by adding titles to each card + creating category cards that showed all the different images of each category (to help with identification during the game).

Here’s the completed game:       Rally Up! Museum Game          Category Cards

For the month of April, Blue Orange proudly names Toys to Treasure in Evansville, Indiana Store of the Month for their exceptional customer service. Toys to Treasure has been in business for 28 years and has worked with Blue Orange ever since they first saw Gobblet at Toy Fair. I had the pleasure to speak with Kathy, the owner, about her store, and she mentioned how all of their research about owning a toy store told them to attend Toy Fair in New York. Kathy and her husband found our booth—she noted it was very small at the time—and were impressed with our mascot game, Gobblet. Since that Toy Fair, Kathy and her husband have been selling Blue Orange games in their store.

When I asked how Toys to Treasure got started, Kathy answered, “Need.” The family needed another job to take on the bills. They started to consider owning a toy store after a few mishaps Kathy had with ordering items from home. At the time, Kathy was homeschooling her 5 year old daughter and 7 year old son. There was one situation where she ordered a cause and effect physics toy that she intended on using to teach the kids science. When she got it in the mail, she found the elves in the toy were made flimsily with felt and smaller than her thumb. “I could have made it myself,” she said. It was from these unfortunate misadventures that they decided to start Toys to Treasure. They wanted to get rid of the guesswork that came with shopping from a catalog or online and give people the sensory experience that comes with touching an item. She continued to home-school her two children in the back of the store, which gave them an immersive experience in understanding life skills and the world of business. Both children took up some part of their parents’ legacies; their son went on to sell jewelry and their daughter became a teacher.

Congratulations Toys to TreasureAnother quality of Toys to Treasure is their choice of games to sell. Kathy stated that they don’t sell games that the parents won’t enjoy playing as well. She wants the parents to enjoy playing with their children rather than feeling forced to play a game that they don’t enjoy (I’m sure the parents appreciate it). She mentioned that Pengaloo was a popular one among the customers, likely for that reason. Kathy mentioned quite a few other games she enjoys from Blue Orange. She thinks that Doodle Quest is fun “if people gave it a chance” and Sumoku is a great thrill for math lovers. She loves Fast Flip the most out of the 2016 releases. She also mentioned Gobblet (of course!), Thumbs Up, Ring It!, Double Shutter, Fastrack, Nada, and Draw 4 as great games for their store. In faith with the store’s vision, Kathy and the employees also make sure to know the games and play them with the customers.

One of the greatest qualities Adrien, our Blue Orange ambassador, noticed about Toys to Treasure was their excellent customer service. He observed that Kathy would always interrupt a meeting to greet a customer coming into the store. Kathy confirmed this, saying that they made sure to welcome all their customers (thought she hastily that you shouldn’t “attack” the customer as they walked through the door). They usually let the customer see the store and take in the “lay of the land” before going to greet them. Then they do their best to find the toy that’s best for them. Kathy uses what she’s learned from her Developmental Psychology and Teaching degree to find toys that are best for certain developmental stages. Often the customers will want toys for children at a specific developmental stage. Sometimes Kathy will search for a toy to occupy an 8-year-old’s time alone or she may find a game to help develop an autistic child’s social skills.

She advises people who want to go into the Toy Industry, “Don’t do it unless you like people,” and she stresses for store owners to “enjoy every person that comes into the store.” She emphasizes the importance in being a “good listener”. She’s learned that customers have a story to tell, and in listening to those stories, she has become a better and wiser person and has found many lifelong friends in her customers.

CertificateThe store has grown over the years and touched the lives of many families. On their website, Toys to Treasure posts up testimonials of some of their customers. A few read:

“Going to Toys to Treasure is like walking back into childhood. The owners are friendly and they know their toys! They are always there to recommend the best toy for your child.” Robyn Merkel

“My sister and I both have small children and we love Toys to Treasure. I live in Sumner, Illinois and we go to Toys to Treasure every time we go to Evansville. We love that they carry so many educational toys. We were both home-schooled and we find it important to make learning fun.” Parent

“Toys to Treasure has been with my family since I was a little girl. I remember going to their store when it was on Morgan Avenue. I always loved their toys, in fact I am pretty sure I still have a few toys that I have kept for all these years. And now that I am a mommy we still enjoy the wonderful toys that they offer…Toys to Treasure is wonderful and I love what they represent…” Kristina

It’s been Blue Orange’s honor to grow with Toys to Treasure, and we are delighted to see how successful they’ve become and how beloved they are by the lives they touch. We are proud to award you Store of the Month for April and wish you the best as your store continues to bring joy to others.

It doesn’t hurt her professional photography services, it only enhances her role to help you capture special moments! While these tips were made with toy stores in mind a lot of the principles can apply to nearly all local businesses. This is only Part One so be on the look out for upcoming blogs for more tips – yes, plural!

  • Try to keep demos at the appropriate eye level. If you have a toy store, keep the demos at children’s level for easy reach. Customers come in all sizes and ages so be cognizant
  • Keep inexpensive items close to the register for that last minute impulse buy.

Every year members of our sales team pack up their vans and head out across the country to visit current and prospective stores. While we take pride in this unique aspect of our company, we are also aware of the impact that multiple cross country trips in a van has on the environment.

What exactly is the impact? Well, for example, it is emitting 67 tons of CO2 just in the year, 2014. That is the reason that we have teamed up with the outstanding organization, the Pur Projet to reduce our carbon footprint as a company.

Certificate BLUE ORANGE (2015-04-16) (AH-PE-14407)

The Pur Projet organization has a vision to change the world, “Our mission is to integrate social and environmental innovations to the heart of business and corporate activities, to regenerate, revitalize and preserve the ecosystems we depend upon.” With that said, Pur Projet believes that their partnered organizations have ‘Pur(e)’ intentions to better the social and environmental issues that exists on our planet. The organization provides native trees for the reforestation on small producers’ cocoa plantations in the Amazon.

Pur Projet says it right! By giving back to the environment that gives companies, like Blue Orange, the resources to produce the products that are sold, is only fair. Pur Projet goes on to say, “By integrating these concerns within their sectors and activities, Pur Projet partner organizations offer a vision and means that lead to concrete projects to improve social and environmental activities and products.” Trees are planted following agroforestry systems improving the yield of cocoa trees while preserving soil and water quality and protecting biodiversity.

Since 2000, 952,000 miles were driven by Blue Orange, releasing 370 tons of CO2, which means that 1,110 trees have been planted to date. This past year, 2014, Blue Orange vans drove 152,000 miles consuming 10 liters/100 km of gas producing 67 tons of CO2 emissions. This means that 201 trees were planted in 2014 to offset our carbon footprint! When a tree has reached it’s level of maturity, it will take 14 years for the tree to offset one year of 67 tons of CO2 emissions. Not only does this help to shrink our carbon stamp and to fight against global warming, but there are also co-benefits with social and environmental issues.

The Pur Project shares that, “Small-scale farmers and their families account for 4.2 billion people or two-thirds of the world’s population. They can, if supported financially, fight efficiently against climate change by applying agroforestry models that incorporate trees to their existing crops.” As a result, 1,500 farmers cultivate Fair Trade and Organic certified cocoa to increase and diversify their earnings. While planting trees reduces carbon footprint and global warming, giving work opportunities to small-scale farmers makes the Pur Projet a win-win organization!

In 2014, our 201 trees have been planted by farmer, Elias Villacorta, in a forest area of Peru. The type of tree depends on the location and the square footage, but the type of tree planted could be a Caoba or Capirona tree.

We are so proud to be able to reduce our carbon footprint as a company, but even prouder to do so with a world changing organization with Pur(e) Intentions, such as Pur Projet. We understand the need to work towards the preservation of our planet. We believe it’s important to take steps to reduce the environmental impact of our business and to share our passion for sustainability.

Top Ten Toys – April Store of the Month

Top Ten Toys – April Store of the Month

Blue Orange Games is lucky to partner with a fantastic bunch of retailers who are passionate about their businesses and supportive of our games.  We want to do more to recognize the stores and individuals that make our mission possible.  That’s how our monthly spotlight on an outstanding Blue Orange Games retailer came about! We are pleased to announce that Top Ten Toys in Seattle, Washington is our Store of the Month for April!

1113_top_ten_toys_1-4

Xavier, from our sales team, nominated this store because of their dedication to the local community and their passion for creating fun times with their customers. Xavier also recognized Top Ten Toys because of their loyalty and being one of our oldest customers. Katie, a Top Ten Toys employee, remembers Julien, Blue Orange Owner, coming into the store of Blue Orange’s first big road trip!

Top Ten Toys has been open since 1987 and is the largest toy store in Seattle! Top Ten originally opened as a store for homeschoolers which is why they bring in toys with an educational flare. When speaking with Kristi, Top Ten buyer, she stated “Our mission statement is keeping healthy play alive. I have been working here for over 10 years. I became the game and skill toy buyer shortly after I started working here because I am a board game lover and a skill toy enthusiast!”

IMG_1449 StoreoftheMonth_HiRes

Top Ten Toys is ready to share their secrets to success, “I think the secret to having a successful toy store is knowing your customer base and being part of your community.  We donate to local charities and school auctions.”  There is no doubt that Top Ten Toys puts their community first. With cheerful employees and ready to help at anytime service, customers never leave the store disappointed. Even when visiting the website, the contact button is always available if you have a question when shopping! Their dedication to customer satisfaction is evident when Krista shares “I get the most satisfaction out my job when a customer falls in love with an item we carry.”

It is a joy to have been working with Top Ten Toys for many years. Since Kristi is familiar with our game selection, we thought it would be fun to hear her personal favorites, “Blue Orange has many games I enjoy but my favorite is Flash or Fastrack but I have to say I am really enchanted with Thumbs Up!  That one is lots of fun!!!” It is always great to hear that our current and classic games can be lumped together as someone’s favorites.

While all of the spotlight is on Top Ten Toys, we couldn’t help but to be tickled by Kristi’s comment, “My favorite thing about Blue Orange is how everyone who works for the company is enthusiastic and fun loving. Every employee believes in the products, which is not hard to do since all your games are AWESOME!

And of course, we think that Top Ten Toys is awesome too!

April is Autism Awareness Month

April is Autism Awareness Month

autism awareness image

I love playing family board games. This isn’t just because I work for Blue Orange. It’s not just because I have fond memories of playing board games as a kid or even as an adult. The simple reason is that it engages my son in a way that other things cannot. My son has autism and ADHD. Board games provide us a way to engage with each other and with friends and family , and work on his social skills. I learned and honed the skills of game play for my son through ABA therapy sessions. We worked with him on turn taking, focus and attention, visual perception, social skills, sportsmanship, etc. He would have so much fun with the games that he never thought he was doing any type of “work”.

He beats me in Gobblet Gobblers (probably his favorite game). He can’t get enough of the multiple Spot It! versions. Sometimes, we don’t play the game the way it’s meant to be played and that’s ok too. I have fond memories of a playdate with him playing “hide and go seek Spot It! cards” at a friend’s house. Not only was the mother ok with our kids running around the house trying to find hidden cards but she encouraged it! He made up a new game using materials from an already beloved game and everyone had fun.

April is Autism Awareness Month. I’m so happy to hear about the role that board games contribute to ABA Therapy. I’m a big fan of Sam Blanco, BCBA and her website – Teach Through Games. She’s an ABA therapist that utilizes games in her therapy sessions. She does a great job of modifying games to her students individual skills.

Have fun and learn through playing!
